Union Communications (“Union Comm”), a leading agency in policy advocacy and communications in Hong Kong, proudly announced the publication of the APEC Technology Empowers Low-Carbon Action (TELCA) Best Practice Report, now officially released on the APEC website.
This landmark report highlights innovative strategies and technologies driving the transition to a sustainable, resilient, and low-carbon future across the APEC region. It provides a valuable resource for the public and private sectors committed to sustainable development: https://www.apec.org/publications/2024/11/apec-technology-empowers-low-carbon-action-(telca)--best-practice-report
Developed in collaboration with experts, policymakers, and organizations from nine APEC economies, the report features 20 exemplary case studies showcasing advancements in five sectors, including energy, transport, industry, buildings, and individual actions. Union Comm also extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Beijing International Exchange Association for their unwavering support and guidance throughout this project.
The report emphasizes the critical need for a Just Transition, ensuring the path to sustainability incorporates social inclusion, poverty eradication, and the creation of decent work opportunities for all.
The APEC TELCA Principles, central to the report, provide a framework to guide economies in adopting low-carbon technologies while addressing key challenges in APEC. These principles focus on:
Just transition: Ensuring inclusivity by prioritizing vulnerable groups and fostering equity in the shift to low-carbon economies.
Regional collaboration: Promoting policy alignment and the sharing of innovative solutions among APEC member economies.
Policy and technology integration: Leveraging advanced technologies to tackle carbon emissions and energy challenges effectively.
The report also highlights that reducing carbon emissions doesn’t always require advanced technologies or large-scale investments. Simple changes in daily consumption patterns can make a significant impact. For example, Huawei Spicy Hot Pot Restaurant in China has introduced a low-carbon vegetarian menu, demonstrating that offering plant-based diets can greatly reduce carbon footprints. Studies show that vegetables produce only 1% of the carbon emissions compared to beef, making plant-based diets a highly effective and accessible way to combat climate change.
“We are honored to have played a role in this significant initiative, which highlights the vital contributions of APEC economies and stresses the importance of equitable progress in achieving global climate goals,” said Sam Han, partner at Union Comm. “This marks our fourth report for APEC, aligning with our mission to advance digital inclusion and gender equality.”
